Casual Friday

I wake up a little later than usual because it's Friday. Slightly more rested, and more than slightly anticipating the weekend ahead, I roll out of bed and shower. There's a spring in my step because it's Friday. It's casual Friday.

I dry my hair and put on make-up. I pick out a shirt, necklace. I spray perfume.

I shimmy into my favorite jeans.

I drive to work and stop at Starbucks for my coffee because it's Friday. It's my special treat - a latte, or just a cup of coffee with a shot of cinnamon dolce.

I pull into the parking lot and parents are in line dropping off their children. Their goodbye is my hello. I walk down to my classroom feeling happy and confident because it's Friday, and I'm wearing my favorite jeans.

There's a full length mirror in my classroom. I steal looks, even though I feel vain doing so. A little glance from the side - a little twist. I'm in my jeans, it's Friday - only a few more hours and I can be Kate instead of Mrs. C.

It's a typical day. Someone swears and I send them to the office. Someone has a meltdown and we have to talk in the hallway about something that happened at recess. A broken violin string. A bow that won't tighten. Someone drops their rosin on the floor. They go to the bathroom, they go to the nurse, they go to the bubbler. They ask questions, they give answers. I can handle it all. I'm comfortable. I'm confident. I'm wearing my favorite jeans and there's only an hour and a half left.

I get home before my husband because it's Friday. I don't have private lessons. I don't change my clothes when I get home because I'm already comfortable in my jeans.

I roll out pizza dough, pour wine and set the table.

I see headlights coming up the driveway.

Dennis comes in and starts the weekend with me - he's wearing his jeans today too.

A little something new I'm trying - I'm participating in "The Sunday Creative" as an attempt to stretch my creative wings and put some of myself in print and out to the public.

  2. I absolutely loved that story. I loved how you kept saying "because I'm wearing my favorite jeans". I love the feel of a fabulous pair of jeans and how they can help you get through almost anything.

  3. This was SUCH a wonderful read, Kate! Nicely done. I used to love whenever I could wear jeans to work. Such freedom! And your day honestly sounds so much like mine (the constant requests and whatnot...)
The best part of being home with the kids? Being able to wear jeans all the time... when it's not 90 degrees of course!
So glad you participated in The Sunday Creative!

  4. Thanks for the positive feedback everyone! This is certainly out of my comfort zone, but fun. :)

  5. Kate this is great! There is something to be said about Fridays and I think you captured that here.

Also, I always forget you are an orchestra teacher! I played the violin for 12 years and miss it terribly. So, I giggled when I read someone dropped their rosin on the floor. That was always frustrating :)

  6. Brenna - I did not know you're a string player! How fantastic! Yes, dropping the rosin is bad. Dropping the cello is worse, and we had quite a few of those this year!

  7. Dropping the cello? Yikes! That's never a good sound to hear.
