Daddy Dearest

I just wanted to take a moment and wish everyone a Happy Father's Day! Whether you're a Dad, or celebrating with a Dad - enjoy the day!

I am so lucky to have two wonderful and supportive parents, but this being Father's Day and all, I want to tell you about my Dad.

My Dad is the hardest worker I've ever met. He takes everything he does seriously, being work, or yard work, or remembering to take his daily walks. My whole life he has encouraged me to work hard, and reminds me that as long as I'm doing my best I will be loved no matter the outcome.

My Dad is a sensitive man. I did not grow up with the stereotypical man on the couch watching the game, drinking a beer. My Dad cleans, he gardens. When something is emotional for him, he shows it. My Dad said "I love you." daily. He told me I was beautiful, even when my hair was frizzy and I had braces. He said "I'm proud of you." often.

He loves the Red Sox but does not ignore others in the room when the game is on. I grew up seeing that men did not have to fit into a mold - afraid to show their feelings, can only talk about sports. Luckily, I was able to marry someone who does not fit this mold either.

My Dad is responsible for me starting to play the violin. He was encouraging, and loved to sit with me while I was practicing... and as an orchestra teacher I can tell you with absolute certainty that I was not sounding good as a first-year string player. In high school he drove my friend Kendra and I to private lessons, and youth orchestra, and string quartet rehearsal at the community music school 25 miles away. He didn't seem to mind that Kendra and I sat in the back seat talking in code about kissing and boys while he sat in the front seat alone.

My Dad is great to talk to when you have a problem. He does not panic - at least to your face.

My Dad still addresses emails to me as "Little Baby Katie".

He is always willing to help with anything we ask for in/around our house... even if it means coming over after work and digging out dead bushes from the front of the house. Even if it means suffering multiple bee stings when it turns out those dead bushes are on top of a huge nest of bees.

I am like my Dad in many ways, and these qualities are some of the things I'm most proud of in myself.

Happy Father's Day!
Love you!
